CHITWAN, Dec 7: Nepali Congress has called off Chitwan banda on Wednesday afternoon after the home ministry formed a committee to investigate the Bharatpur jail incident.

The strike enforcers called off the strike after a rally in Chitwan. NC General Secretary Krishna Prasad Sitaula had addressed the rally.[break]

He said that the district administration should be blamed for the incident. "Government along with the local administration should take the responsibility of the incident," Sitaula said addressing the rally.

He further criticized the administration of not being able to provide security even inside the jail.

The condition of Shiva Poudel, president of Tarun Dal, who was injured has not improved so far. He went through a surgery yesterday at Bharatpur Medical College.

NC had called Chitwan banda protesting the attack on Poudel since yesterday.

The strike had crippled the normal life in Chitwan since early morning as transportation services had come to a grinding halt and all educational institutions, markets and shops had remained closed.

Hundreds of passengers had been stranded on the road due to the banda.

They had snatched the keys of the vehicles plying on the road. Protesting the incident, Nepal Students Union has also called for indefinite shut down of all the educational institutions in Chitwan.
