KATHMANDU, Jan 1: A ‘houseful’ board in front of a movie theatre might be a regular thing, but the same message at a drama theatre would be quite unusual. ‘Chiso Bhanjyang' being showcased at Mandala Theatre, Anamnagar since December 22 has been received an overwhelming number of audience and the theatre was almost jam-packed on Saturday. Some even sat down on the floor to watch the play.

“I am surprised to see the theatre houseful, and it’s my privilege to receive such a response from the audience,” said debutant director of the play Sandeep Shrestha.

The one-and-half-hour-long play features Garima (Pooja Lama) who falsely accuses Alok (Anup Neupane) of raping her sister and sends him to jail only to realize later that she’d made a mistake. She then decides to write a novel based on her remorse.

Apart from the theme of ‘atonement’, the director has also worked on the subject of domination of higher class over the lower class people. 'Chiso Bhanjyang’ is an adaptation of a popular novel ‘Atonement’ by Ian McEwan. However, Sandeep has successfully added Nepali traditional flavor to the play while also justifying the original one.

Talking about the technical part of the play, it is set on the rural eastern part of Nepal and Sandeep has used traditional Kirati music to give it a traditional touch. The show is slated to conclude on January 14.
