KATHMANDU, Aug 7: The government has nominated Nepal Army's Chief of General Staff Lt. General Rajendra Chhetri as the acting chief of Nepal Army.
A cabinet meeting held in Singha Durbar on Friday decided to propose Chhetri as the Acting Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) of the Nepal Army as the incumbent CoAS, Gaurav SJB Rana, is retiring in September.

Minister for General Administration Lal Babu Pandit informed that the cabinet has forwarded the proposal to the president for his approval. The chief of Nepal Army is formally appointed by the president upon the cabinet's recommendation.
Chhetri will assume office as the acting CoAS from August 11 when CoAS Gaurav SJB Rana will taking leave from office one month before his tenure expires. Rana will formally retire on September 10 due to age limit.
The cabinet is set to elevate Chhetri as the CoAS after Rana retires on September 10. He will take over as the CoAS following the oath-taking ceremony administered by President Ram Baran Yadav.
The government had promoted Chhetri to the post of Lt. General on February 24 on the recommendation of the Ministry of Defense, paving the way for his elevation to the post of army chief.
