KATHMANDU, April 30: Hours after registering an impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki, the government on Sunday appointed Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli as the acting chief justice of the Supreme Court. Parajuli was appointed the acting CJ based on the principle of seniority. The acting CJ took oath of the office subsequently after his appointment.
Earlier on the day, 249 lawmakers from Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Center) had lodged an impeachment motion against Chief Justice Sushila Karki. In the impeachment motion registered at the Parliament's Secretariat on Sunday evening, the lawmakers have accused CJ Karki of “not upholding the independence of judiciary, encroaching on the executives' prerogatives and ignoring facts and evidences while issuing verdicts on IGP-related writ petitions”.
Similarly, the government has also recalled the security detail provided to CJ Karki, who became automatically suspended after the introduction of the impeachment motion.
