KATHMANDU, Sept 2: The Office of the Government Attorney in Kathmandu on Tuesday filed a character assassination case against CPN-UML Central Committee member Ain Mahar under the Cybercrime Act at the Kathmandu District Court.
Mahar, who had surrendered to police on August 27 in connection with the allegations, has been accused by a woman of defaming her through digital platforms. According to the charge sheet, he allegedly circulated defamatory content on social media and sent offensive messages via apps such as WhatsApp, violating Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2006 (2063 BS).

The court is expected to allow Mahar a few days to appear and will then decide whether to remand him in judicial custody, release him on bail, or place him under court supervision. He had earlier provided a statement to the Government Attorney’s Office and was released on a general date.
Last year, audio and video clips containing obscene content surfaced online. In another leaked audio, a woman identified as Rashmila Kumari Dhami accused Mahar of abandoning her after an alleged physical relationship. Following the controversy, Mahar resigned from the UML Central Committee but was reinstated a few months later.
Mahar is regarded as a close confidant of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
