CHITWAN, April 28: The cancer patients and their relatives staged a protest at the BP Koirala Cancer Hospital on Thursday demanding resumption of all services. All services, excluding emergency, have been closed on Thursday as the dispute over the appointment of hospital´s executive director remained unsolved.

The meeting held Wednesday to solve the dispute ended without any concrete decision. All the staffs, including doctors, have left for Kathmandu where they are scheduled to hold meetings to resolve the problem.[break]

The patients undergoing treatment in the hospital have been left unattended. The repeated appeal from the patients and their relatives went unheard. "The doctors had told me the treatment would continue from Thursday," said Bholanath who suffers from intestine cancer and has undergone four operations.

"But they have left us in more pain." Buddhi Prasad Baral who had come here from Kaski to get treatment for his 7-year-old daughter who has cancer in her ear also participated in the agitation. The patients also appealed to the government to keep the facility out of political bounds.

"We sold our properties and came here in the hopes of getting treatment here," said an irate relative of a patient. "We don´t know whether to wait here or to return without the treatment." The patients have signed a memorandum and sent it to the District Administration Office. They said they will continue the demonstration until services are resumed.

The doctors said the dispute over the executive director has paralyzed the hospital´s functions. They said the matter can be resolved only through government intervention.

The appointment of Dr Laxmi Narayan Singh as the executive director after the retirement of Dr Bhaktaman Shrestha, has resulted in the dispute.

Meanwhile, Nepal Cancer Relief Society has urged the concerned authorities to resolve the dispute as soon as possible to ensure the treatment rights of the cancer patients. The hospital treats around four thousand patients annually.
