KATHMANDU, Feb 23: The need of making the implementation of the Right to Information Act 2064 more effective has been stressed.

Speaking at a discussion program organized in the capital on Wednesday, Information Commissioner of the National Information Commission Sabita Bhandari (Baral) said though the Right to Information Act came into force since 2007 and its Regulations in 2008, many people are still not aware about it.[break]

Stating that the trend of hiding information of public interest is still in practice, she said the implementation of the Right to Information Act is not satisfactory because people are not aware about their right to information.

Many people have filed cases at the Commission in order to acquire information, but despite repeated initiative by the Commission the agency concerned don´t release the required information, she added.

The Working Women Journalists´ Group organized the program.

Group Vice Chairperson Subechha Bindu Tuladhar urged journalists to focus on vivid aspects of the Act in their writing so as to make people aware of it.
