"The budget should be introduced through consensus only," Khanal told journalists after a tea party hosted by Reporter´s Club in Kathmandu on Thursday. [break]
Khanal´s remark came a day after the caretaker government led by his own party decided to introduce budget and requested time from the Speaker to unveil the budget in parliament.
Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal drew the attention of other political leaders, including Maoist Vice Chairmen Dr Baburam Bhattarai and Mohan Baidya, to the financial crisis the country may face if the budget is not passed soon.
The impasse over the budget arose as the Madhav Nepal-led government stepped down on June 30 and a new government is yet to be formed. The government is running out of the budget approved by parliament under a special provision of the Interim Constitution.
Uncertainty prevails over budget as the UCPN (Maoist) does not want the caretaker government to table the budget in parliament.
"All parties should reach an agreement on tabling the budget, which should be prepared in a transparent manner. Discussions are underway in this regard," the prime minister said.
