KATHMANDU, March 2: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has deactivated all its mobile transmission towers along the about 500-km India-Nepal border for reasons of national security. None of the private service providers have towers along the border. [break]

Officials said the action had been taken in the last two days after instructions to the effect from the Telecommunication Ministry, according to indianexpress.com.

It had been noticed that the BSNL mobile network, which worked in Nepal also, was being used by allegedly criminal elements for illegal activities like smuggling arms, drugs and counterfeit currency.

“By taking this step, we have tried to chop off the helping hand of those involved in anti-India activities on the India-Nepal border,” the online quoted an official of the ministry as saying.

Confirming the action, BSNL general manager of Basti range, S M Aale Raza, said the company was authorized only to provide signals within the territory of India.
