DHARAN, April 16: Students of Dental Surgery at B P Koirala Institute of Health Science have taken to the street after an assistant professor allegedly inflicted corporal punishment on them.

The students of BDS (bachelor of dental surgery) organized a sit-in against Dhirendra Kumar Giri, a doctor and assistant professor of the Department of Periodontics at the institute, accusing him of treating the students inhumanely. They have demanded his resignation. [break]

"After Giri hit BDS third-year students with his board marker, wringed their ears, and inflicted other types of corporal punishments, the students have launched the protest," said an agitating BDS student.

Around 230 students of BDS including intern doctors at the hospital have been staging sit-in in front of the vice-chancellor´s office and the dental college for the last two days from 8 am in the morning. Likewise, the students have also boycotted classes for the last two days.

He also informed that the students had submitted a memorandum to the Department, the vice-chancellor´s office and the hospital administration demanding Giri´s resignation a week ago. “After our demands went unheard, we resorted to protest,” he said.

“A teacher behaves like a ruffian inside the classroom and threatens to thrash us. How can students study in such situation?” said another student of the institute.

The protest has also affected the hospital services.

“We will continue our protest until he resigns,” said another girl student.
