Birtamod municipality unveils a five-year periodic plan to make it one of the prosperous areas in eastern Nepal

JHAPA, June 19: One of the major commercial hubs of Jhapa– Birtamod Municipality– has developed a five-year periodical plan. Municipality has formulated planning for the long-term development with the arrival of the newly-elected people’s representative from the local level election held earlier last month.

Mayor Pabitra Mahatara said that the five-year periodical plan has been developed by incorporating various aspects such as education, health, agriculture, physical infrastructure, forest, tourism and businesses.

The upcoming action plan of the municipality has been made with the slogan ‘Growth of industry, business, health, education, agriculture and employment: Prosperity of Birtamod with development and good governance’. The municipality has formulated planning to encourage private sector by creating an appropriate environment for the establishment of medical colleges for the study of medicine towards health, to encourage the establishment of hospitals that have services such as Cancer, Kidney, Eye, Spinal Cord injury, Brain and Gastro, to conduct regular door-to-door services for health check-up and treatment of senior and disabled citizens and to operate ambulance service with specialist doctors for them.

Similarly, plans have been made to provide access to health services to the economically backward communities and  build a healthy society by integrating the concept of multi-sectoral nutrition with all citizens. Similarly, the municipality has determined five-year goals which include ensuring higher education to more than 90 percent of urban dwellers. Similarly, education up to secondary level will be made completely free while technical education will be made available up to postgraduate level. The plan also seeks to make sure that all children are enrolled in schools.

In the same way, the municipality plans to provide basic and pure drinking water to more than 80 percent urban dwellers through pipelines and to the rest of the population using tube wells, develop agricultural sector and increase production with the development in fertilizers, seed and technology and become self-sufficient in fish, meat, eggs and vegetables.

The goal is to upgrade roads by constructing utility corridors, install traffic lights at crossroads including drain utility corridors, build overhead bridges, underground subways and blacktop a total of 125 kilometers of road.

Likewise, the plan includes making three suspension bridges and 40 culvert bridges, providing electricity to all households, formulating a master plan for urban development with surface drains, construction of a well-equipped building with a large parking area in Budhabare Bazaar in the name of the municipality.

Nagendra Sangraula, Deputy Chief of the municipality, said that the municipality plans to promote industrial development of the southern part of the Gokul Joshi Marg of Birtamod-2, create appropriate legal framework for setting up new industries, and make industries eco-friendly to minimize environmental pollution.

For the promotion of tourism in the municipality, Biratpokhar Ward No. 3, Hariyali Samudayik Ban Ward No. 6, Ramchowk Samudayik Ban Ward No. 2, Bahardashi Pokhari Ward No. 2, Sadu Pokhari, Madhu Pokhari and Telkari Pokhari Ward No. 10 will be developed as tourist areas. The city plans to develop ShaktiPeeth as a religious and tourist area.
