“We have only six operation theatres and hundred of patients are thronging for operations,” Director of the hospital Dr Bulanda Thapa said adding, “Patients have to wait months for surgery.” [break]
The hospital said new patients have to wait more than six months for surgery at the general OT. Dr Thapa said the hospital is going to built the new operation theatres in response of the fury of patients and their relatives at not getting the service in time.
“A patient on Thursday tore up all the hospital documents right in front of me when I replied to him that I was helpless to conduct his operation early,” he said adding, “He was given a date four months later for a kidney stone operation.”
He said MoPH is positive towards the hospital´s proposal and assured to allocate money in the new budget.
The hospital has only two general OTs now, where patients with orthopedic, kidney-stone, cancer and gastro problems are waiting for their turn. Director Thapa said the hospital plans to add two more OTs for general surgery. One special OT will be for kidney transplants and two others will be for cardio, chest, ENT and for neuro patients.
He said due to the lack of OTs, cancer patients are compelled to wait more than three months to get an operation. They face severe pain continuously if they do not get their operation. Doctors prescribe high doses of painkiller as relief.
The hospital said patients should get a hospital bed a month beforehand for surgery. “It is hard to get a bed in our hospital, but ministers, legislators and other officials often pressure me to conduct operations on their people,” Dr Thapa said.
He hoped that patients would not have to wait long after the construction of the new operation theatres.
