KATHMANDU, April 19: Maoist lawmakers speaking at the parliament on Sunday have warned that their party, Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), will capture more land if the government and parties do not give full shape to the Land Reforms Commission and commission on squatters. [break]

"If the parties keep on obstructing the process of giving full shape to the committee for land reforms and landless squatters, we will be left with no option except encouraging the peasants to capture more land,´ said Indrajit Tharu, a Maoist lawmaker.

Another Maoist member Ashok Kumar Rokaya criticized Nepali Congress (NC) and some other parties for demanding release of the land captured by the Maoists during the insurgency. He said disclosure of whereabouts of missing people should be first priority than release of seized property.

Speaking during Special Hour, Maoist lawmaker Salikram Jammkattel said the country is on the verge of political polarization – between the supporters of new Nepal and regressive forces.

"There have been attempts to derail the constitution-making process," said Jammkattel. "If parties like Nepali Congress press for return of seized property then things could take serious turn.”

He warned that the Maoists would return to their old ways if the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML resort to politics of confrontation. “The future will decide who will survive in the end," he said.

Jammkattel said his party was dissatisfied with the SC stay order in the Nepalese Army generals’ service extension case, and the contempt of court case against the prime minister and the finance minister.

NC lawmakers speaking at the parliament strongly criticized the Maoist-led government for failing to control Nepali citizens’ entry into casinos. They alleged that the Maoists were extorting from casino operators and allowing illegal activities.

"The Maoists have massively accumulated money from the casinos and the UML-led home ministry has failed to control Nepalis from entering into such gambling centers," said NC lawmaker Gagan Thapa.

Uma Adhikari of NC flayed the Maoists for leading the country to anarchy. She alleged that the prime minister makes commitments that he would not fulfill.

Bhim Rawal of UML demanded government clarification regarding the promised relief and rehabilitation for flood victims in the Far West Region. The prime minister and the home minister had earlier assured that the flood victims would be provided relief and rehabilitated.

Rawal criticized the government for sending three ministers in a helicopter to remote areas in the Far West Region without informing the political party representatives in the region. He also demanded that the government provide relief to drought-hit people in Karnali and in the far-western part of the country.
