According to a statement issued by Nepal´s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, Bhattarai conveyed the greetings and best wishes from President Dr Ram Baran Yadav as well as the Chairman of the Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi for the overall success of the United Nations and of the Secretary-General at a brief courtesy meeting. Bhattarai expressed confidence that Nepal-UN relations would attain new heights and said he looked forward to working closely with him and the UN membership to that end.
On the occasion, Bhattarai also updated the Secretary-General on the current political situation in Nepal, including preparations for the Constituent Assembly elections scheduled for November 19.
Bhattarai reached New York on August 13 to take up his new diplomatic responsibility.
According to the statement, Secretary-General Ban expressed best wishes to the government and the people of Nepal in the path of further democratization of the country, especially in view of the upcoming elections to the Constituent Assembly. He also hailed Nepal´s longstanding contribution to various aspects of the work of the UN.
Ban also congratulated the newly appointed envoy and extended best wishes for success ahead and assured the ambassador of his full support, particularly in promoting the cause of least developed and landlocked developing countries in the days to come.
