“After his appointment (Regmi) as a Chairperson of the Council of Minister, there has been systematic attack on the lawyers by the state authority who have always stood for rule of law, independence of the judiciary and human rights in Nepal,” reads a letter sent to the UN General Secretary, adding “There has been a visible example of his informal influence in the judiciary which not only affects the right of the people to access justice but also endangers the constitutional regime and judicial independence.”
The lawyers’ association in Nepal, has been demanding the resignation of Regmi since he assumed office as Chairman of the Interim Election Council. Regmi was off to New York on Thursday, to participate in the 68th UN General Assembly.
Regmi is scheduled to hold a meeting with UN Gen Secy Ban on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
