UDAYAPUR, MARCH 2: Locals heaved a sigh of relief after a bailey bridge came into operation in Dhud Kosi River at Jayramghati along on border of Khotang and Okhaldunga districts from Saturday.

With the construction of the belly bridge, Jayramghati is now connected to the capital and other parts of the country, making transportation and import of goods easier. [break]

After a ferry was washed away in a flood in the river some eight months ago, locals of the districts were compelled to cross the river on boats for travel and import of goods.

Construction materials required for bridge construction were imported from Dhangadi. Bishnu Kafle, engineer at the Division Road Office, Okhaldunga said the construction of the bridge began a month ago.

According to engineer Kafle, the bridge has been constructed only as a temporary arrangement and that it would be removed during the rainy season as water level in the river increases.

Likewise, Khotang chapter of FNCCI said though a temporary arrangement the bridge would connect the Jayramghati to the capital and other districts across the country. The Khotang FNCCI also stated that inhabitants of the Khotang will not face crisis of daily necessities now.

“Prices of daily necessities was very high as goods had to be transported through boats and ferries. But now daily necessities will be affordable,” said Khusnarayan Saiju, district president of FNCCI.

After a ferry was swept away in a flood at Dhud Kosi River on June 18, 2011, Khotang had lost link with major districts of the Tarai.
