The Baidya faction has been protesting the defense minister´s remarks and the four-point deal reached between the UCPN (Maoist) and Madhes-based parties.
Cadres from the Baidya faction took to the streets despite Dahal´s request to party senior leader Mohan Baidya earlier in the morning to withdraw the protests.
Addressing the cadres after the torch rally in Kathmandu, Maoist lawmaker Amrita Thapamagar accused the government of trying to cover up defense minister´s serious mistake. “If the government doesn´t sack the minister immediately we will take necessary action from the streets. Don´t compel us to resort to such a move,” Thapa said.
According to leader close to Baidya, the latter turned down Dahal´s proposal right away. “Kiran ji (Baidya) rejected the party chairman´s proposal stating that the scheduled protests would not be withdrawn before first sacking the defense minister and scrapping the four-point deal reached with the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF),” Maoist central committee member Maheshwar Dahal, close to Baidya, told Republica.
On Friday, cadres from the Baidya faction took out torch rallies in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Chitwan, Nuwakot, Dhading and other districts in the western region. On Saturday, they have planned to take out similar rallies in the eastern region. The faction has planned to hold interactions, corner meets and mass gatherings at various places across the country to discuss the issues on Sunday.
