BAGLUNG, July 19: Local coffee farmers have taken initiatives to export their produce to Europe and the USA after Nepali coffee companies were reluctant to pay better price.

"An agreement has been signed in this regard. We are exporting coffee for the first time to Germany. We hope that farmers will get attractive price for their produce," said Achaya. The German company has offered US$6 for a kg of green bean coffee. He said a US company is also positives about buying Nepali coffee.

The association has been purchasing parchment coffee for Rs 145 per kg from farmers. National Tea and Coffee Development Board has fixed the price for a kilo of parchment coffee at Rs 140. The association processes the parchment coffee into green bean before exporting it overseas. According to farmers some 300 tons of coffee is produced in Syangja and Parbat district every year.

Farmers have been complaining that big processing companies are not offering reasonable price for their produce.

"Even reputed companies aren´t giving us reasonable price and on top of this they do not pay farmers on time," said Bhawani Prasad Sharma, the chairman of Coffee Producers Association in Parbat.

Local farmers in Parbat are preparing to export 10 tons of parchment coffee overseas. Local farmers have been attracted toward coffee farming due to rising demand and soaring price of coffee in domestic and international market.
