KATHMANDU, Dec 4: The Supreme Court on Sunday ordered the government to stay the ongoing works on widening the Arniko Highway till December 7 when it is set to decide whether the works should continue or not.

Taking up a writ petition filed by the people from New Baneshwar affected by the ongoing road expansion of the Kathmandu-Bhaktapur section of the Arniko Highway, Justice Girish Chandra Lal passed the stay order. The people moved the court, accusing the government of expanding the road exceeding 25 yards from the highway.

The court also ordered the lawyers of the defendants to be present before it on December 7 to take part in a discussion on whether the works on widening of the road should continue or not.
