Army dominates boxing ring

JHAPA, Dec 28: Like other events of the Seventh National Games, pugilists of the departmental giant Tribhuvan Army Club dominated the ring winning five gold medals on Wednesday. 

In the first day of the final matches played in Bhadrapur, Jhapa, other two departmental sides -- Armed Police Force Club and Nepal Police Club -- won three and one gold medals respectively. Similarly, Central Region was the only other team to win gold in the event. In the meantime, Army and APF bagged four silver each while police won one silver.

Lalita Maharjan of Army claimed gold in women's 48 kg while silver of the event went to Diwana Sherma of Police. APF's Mala Rai won gold in women's 51 kg and Gita Magar of Army bagged silver in the same event.  

Similarly, in the women's 51 kg and 57 kg events, Army's Bimala and Niru Gurung snatched gold medals respectively while the silver went to APF's Pramila Pandey and Maya Chaudhary. APF's third gold of the day was won by Saraswati Rana Magar as she defeated Army's Sonam Rokka in the women's 60 kg final. 

In the men's 49 kg event, Sushil Thapa won gold for Central Region beating Armyman Subhash BK in the final. Army's Prem Chaudhary bagged gold in the men's 52 kg category while the silver of the event went to Bikram Pariyar of APF. Likewise in the men's 58 kg event, APF's Puran Rai bagged gold and Bimal Rokka of Army won silver. Police's Dinesh Shrestha snatched gold in men's 60 kg category as he enjoyed walkover from APF's injured player Dinesh Chand who was then limited to silver. In the men's 64 kg event, Armyman
Dipak Shrestha won gold while the bronze went to Bhupendra Thapa of Police. 

The remaining finals will be played on Thursday with gold medals up for grabs in eight different weight categories.
