KATHMANDU, April 6: World-record holder Appa Sherpa left Kathmandu on Monday for making his 19th ascent of Mt. Everest, organizer Asian Trekking said.

Appa, 48, will lead the Eco Everest Expedition 2009 that will also include Dawa Steven Sherpa, managing director of Asian Trekking. Apart from breaking his own record for the record number of ascents, Appa’s team will carry back trash from the slopes of Everest.

Meanwhile, three Sherpa brothers, Pemba Dorje Sherpa, 30, Nima Gyalzen Sherpa, 31, and Phurba Tenzing Sherpa, 20, are vying to break Babu Chiri Sherpa’s world record by staying on top of Mount Everest for 24 hours. The three brothers have scaled Everest 14 times between them.

Pemba will climb without supplementary oxygen, but his brothers will use bottled oxygen.
