APF, Eastern Region enter football final (Updated)

KATHMANDU, April 11: Departmental teams dominated athletics on day six of the ongoing Fifth National Games at the Dasharath Stadium, Saturday. [break]



Athletics



In women’s long jump, Keshari Chaudhary of Nepal Police clinched gold with 5.01 meters and in 4X400 meter relay also, the police squad including Keshari won gold to take her personal count to five golds and a bronze.



Earlier, Keshari had won gold in triple jump, 4X100 meter relay and high jump.



Likewise, Pramila Rijal of Armed Police Force (APF) bagged silver with 4.69 meters and Ramita Chaudhary of Mid Western Region came third in the women’s long jump event.



In women’s 4X400 meter relay, Nepal Police squad of Keshari Chaudhary, Chandrakala Thapa, Chhaya Khatri and Sabitri Nepali clocked 4.09.30 minutes to win gold. APF finished second clocking 4.13.65 minutes and Mid Western Region bagged bronze at 4.33.62 minutes.



In men’s 4X400 meter relay, APF team of Santosh Kumar Shrestha, Lok Bahadur Rokaya, Bal Krishna Chaudhary and Suman Bhattarai finished first with a timing of 3.29.12 minutes. Nepal Police bagged silver clocking 3.33.69 minutes and Western Region got bronze at 3.37.18 minutes.



In men’s long jump, Yam Sajan Sunwar of Mid Western Region made a 6.41-meter jump to clinch gold while Vidhyadhar Chaudhary of Nepal Police bagged silver with 3.36 meters. Yogendra Dhimal of Central Region earned bronze.



Cycling



Ajay Pandit and Nirjala Tamrakar won gold in men’s and women’s Cross Country cycling event, respectively, in the National Games on Saturday.



Nirjala completed the race in 1 hour 31 minutes and 51.55 seconds while her nearest competitor Laxmi Magar took 2 hours 29 minutes and 0.46 seconds to claim the silver medal.



In men’s category, Ajay timed 1 hour 42 minutes and 11.07 seconds to beat his nearest competitor Rajiv Rai who completed the event in 1 hour 44 minutes and 14.14 seconds. Mangal Krishna Lama bagged bronze by finishing off in 1 hour 45 minutes and 42.50 seconds.



The men’s event was of six laps whereas that of the women’s was of four laps.



Taekwondo



The 10th SAG Games’ gold medalist Manita Shahi won gold medal in the flyweight category of taekwondo in the ongoing Fifth National Games at Tundikhel on Saturday.



Nepal Police’s Shahi bagged gold in 59-63 kg weight category by defeating Indu Mahato of Central Region. Shahi had won a bronze medal in taekwondo is the 15th Asian Games.



Sabina Rai of Eastern Region and Ganga Gurung of Western Region took bronze medals in the category.



Nepal Police added another gold medal in taekwondo as Ganesh Khadka bagged gold in men’s 58-65 kg category. Kiran Pariyar of Western Region bagged the silver medal whereas Prakash Dagaura of Far Western Region and Anil Lama of Eastern Region shared the bronze.



Boxing



Armed Police Force (APF) dominated the ongoing 23rd national men’s and 2nd women’s national boxing tournament held under the Fifth National Games.



APF secured half a dozen gold medals in the events held at National Sports Council’s Tennis Court, at the Dasarath Stadium, on Saturday.



Sachin Raut opened medals tally for APF by defeating Bimal Kumar of Far Western Region in 48 kg category. Laxman Silakar of central and Hrista Kumar Shahi of Mid-western region bagged the bronze.



In 51 kg category, Central Region’s Sudesh Manandhar claimed gold by defeating Laxman Saud of Far Western Region. Devendra Singh Thakuri of Neapl Army won the gold medal by beating Lachhuman Tamang of APF in 54 kg category.



Similarly, Dinesh Shrestha of Nepal Police defeated Purna Bahadur Lama of APF to win gold in 57 kg category.



Likewise, Ajit Gurung of APF won gold medal in 60 kg event. Sajan Laghu of Central Region bagged the silver. Sushil Ghimire of APF beat Sudan Gurung of Nepal Army in 64 kg to claim the gold.



Anil Gurung of Nepal Army won second gold in boxing by beating Rabindra Chandra of Far Western Region in 69 kg whereas Central Region’s Rajan Silpakar won the gold after he beat Ganash Man Chaudhary of APF in 75 kg category.



Dipak Maharjan of Central Region defeated Nepal Army’s Uddhav Khatri to win gold medal in 91 kg category. Likewise, Max Basnet of Central Region defeated APF’s Mahesh KC to win gold medal in 91 kg.



It was all APF in women’s boxing. APF won all six gold medals in weight categories ranged from 46kg to 60kg.



Mala Rai of APF beat Vishnu Suhang of Jhapa to claim gold medal in 46 kg and Maya Chaudhary beat Sangita Hamal in 48 kg to win the gold.



In 54 kg, Sumitra Napit added gold for APF by defeating Shanti Chaudhari of Bajura in 51 kg and Sanju Lama APF won gold in 54 kg by beating Shilu Dangol of Makawanpur.



Mudha Maya Pakhrin of APF beat Harkha Maya Shrestha of Jhapa in 57 kg and Dipa Chhetri of APF beat Asha Hamal of Kanchanpur in 60 kg category to win gold.



Nepal Police’s Dinesh and APF’s Dipa Chhetri were declared best boxer of the tournament in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.



Snooker



Saroj Kumar Mulmi is Nepal’s new snooker champion. In a very tough final held on Saturday, Mulmi defeated Shyam Khadgi at the National Sports Council premises. Mulmi beat Khadgi 5 frames to 4 in a 9 -frame match. Khadgi was leading the match 4-1 till the fifth frame, but Saroj won the final four frames to win the title 12-109, 91-20, 52-62, 29-75, 42-62, 60-22, 92-19, 74-20 and 77-25.



Tennis



Kumar Adhikari and Ramesh Karki set up the final clash in Lawn Tennis under men’s singles category in the Fifth National Games held at Lawn tennis Court, Satdobato on Saturday.



Kumar ousted Jitendra Pariyar in the first semifinal 4-6, 6-4 and 6-0 while Ramesh struggled past Sri Ram Magar 3-6, 6-4 and 7-6 in another semifinal match.



In women’s singles, Aslesa Lisanovich booked her place in the final defeating Kalpana Thapa Magar 6-0, 0-6 and 6-3. Likewise, Priti Rijal crushed Sagun Thapa in straight sets 6-0 and 6-0.



Chandra Shahi/Renu Bajracharya’s pair and Ramesh Karki/Priti Rijal secured berths for the final round winning their respective semifinal matches in the mixed doubles section.



Football



The Armed Police Force (APF) and the Eastern Region are all set to meet in the football final of the ongoing Fifth National games.



In the first semifinal of the day, a solitary goal from Niraj Shrestha during the added time of the match helped APF register a 1-0 win over the Western Region. Shrestha scored in the 19th minute of extra time to break the goalless deadlock that had marked the end of regular time.



In the other semifinal, the Eastern Region stunned the star-studded Nepal Police Club 2-1. Surendra Tamang and Buddha Chemjong scored one goal each for the winners in the 35th and 71st minutes, respectively. Chetan Ghimire managed to pull one back for NPC in the 87th minute, but it was too little too late. The damage had been done.



Kabbadi



Nepal Army clinched the gold in Men’s Kabbadi under the Fifth National Games defeating Central Region 15-12 in the final match on Saturday . In women’s section, Nepal Police crushed Nepal Army 23-8 for the gold.



Hockey



Far Western Region won the gold defeating Western Region 1-0 in the hockey final held Saturday at St. Xavier´s Ground, Jawalakhel. Bhan Bahadur Chand netted the decisive goal for the winner.



Likewise, Central Region beat Nepal Army 1-0 in the match for the bronze.



Table Tennis



Gita Thapa of Eastern Region won the gold defeating Rita Prajapati of Central Region in the women’s singles table tennis match held at Table Tennis Court, Lainchaur on Saturday. Nabita Shrestha of Nepal Police and Muna Basukala of Central Region bagged the bronze.



In men’s singles, Shiva Sunder Gothe clinched the gold defeating Ajay Suwal of Nepal Police, while Rajendra Kapali and Chandan Shahi of Central Region won the bronze.
