The students belonging to All Nepal National Independent Students UnionRevolutionary (ANNISUR) smeared Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Madhav Sharma and Rector Prof. Dr. Surya Lal Amatya on their faces with soot when the two were walking out of the CERID Hall at about 1:30 pm.
VC Sharma and Rector Amatya were emerging from a meeting with the ambassador of Columbia at CERID Hall on issues of mutual cooperation. The meeting was held there as their offices have been padlocked by the agitating students since some two weeks ago.
“We were coming out of the hall after the envoy left the venue. A group of students came to me and asked why I hiked the examination fee,” said Sharma. “They began smearing our faces with soot when I said there was a nominal fee hike and that it would be difficult to conduct the examinations if we did not hike the fee.”
Rector Amatya, who was accompanying VC Sharma, said, “I feel sorry that there are students of this sort too at our university”. “It is very unfortunate that such incidents take place at our university, a place to learn civilized culture.”
Police have arrested 22 ANNISUR students in connection with the incident. They are currently being detained at Metropolitan Police Range Office, Kalimati. One Lokesh B.K., who was injured in course of a clash with police personnel, is undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital.
ANNISUR general secretary Himal Sharma said the students smeared the two university officials with soot as the TU authorities had failed to heed to their demands even after two weeks of protests. “This was done to draw the attention of the university authorities,” said Sharma, who is the newlyelected Free Students Union president at TU Campus, Kirtipur.
ANNISUR has been staging various protests demanding that the TU authorities revoke a decision to hike the examination fee. They have padlocked the offices of the university VC, rector and registrar since the last two weeks to press their demands.
