KATHMANDU, March 20: Nepal Student Union (NSU), the student wing of the Nepali Congress, has said it has won all seats at 27 campuses as of Friday afternoon in the Free Students´ Union (FSU) elections held nationwide on Thursday. Vote counting in many other colleges is underway.[break]

"We have won the presidency and other seats in at least 54 campuses while we have entered the FSU body, winning one or more seats, in over 100 campuses so far," said Pradeep Poudel at a press meet organized in Kathmandu at 4 p.m. Thursday.

He accused other student unions including CPN-UML-affiliated All Nepal National Free Students´ Union (ANNFSU) of misleading the media and the people by claiming victory in more colleges than they actually won.

He claimed the NSU is ahead of ANNFSU, which claims the victory of its entire panel in at least 55 campuses across the country. "We have made a clean sweep at 55 colleges while we have won the presidency and other seats at 103 colleges," said Bhim Rai, international affairs department chief of ANNFSU. According to him, there are many other colleges where ANNFSU made an entry but did not win the presidency.

The Maoist student wing, All Nepal National Independent Student Union - Revolutionary (ANNISU-R), has said it has made a clean sweep in 32 colleges as of Friday evening. "We have won all the seats in 32 colleges and won the presidency and other seats in 49 colleges so far," said Ratna Dhakal, office secretary of ANNISU-R.

During the press meet, Poudel accused the government and police of remaining mute spectators while ANNFSU and ANNISU-R were allegedly terrorizing NSU candidates and supporters during the poll campaign and election period.

He said the elections at all campuses in Chitwan district are unacceptable to NSU as they were conducted without NSU consent. Poudel demanded re-polling in those colleges. ANNFSU and ANNISU-R won the elections in colleges in Chitwan as the two left student unions formed an alliance for elections purposes in the district.

"The administration conducted elections in Chitwan without our participation while the authorities postponed polls in Padma Kanya Campus, Bagbazar and other colleges upon the request of other student unions," he said. Elections in Padma Kanya were postponed in the afternoon on Thursday. The girls´ college is traditionally a NSU stronghold.

NSU also demanded immediate elections in colleges where they were deferred.
