Ancient Pokhara in exhibition

Though many are familiar with the natural beauty of Pokhara, they are not aware of how Pokhara looked like hundred years ago. People have no idea about the structure of the city back then. Taking this into consideration, Dirghaman and Ganeshman Chitrakar Art Foundation organized a photo exhibition titled ‘Dirghaman Chitrakar ko  paschim kshetra  ko tyo bela ko yatra.’ The exhibition was held at the premises of Ratna Temple in Lake Side, Pokhara admist pokhara festival . All 42 photos put on display were captured about a century ago.

The photos were taken by photographer, Dirghaman Chitrakar during his visit to the western part of the country. The exhibition is initiated by Dirghaman’s grandson Kiranman Chitrakar.

According to Kiranman, more than 300,000 people have visited the exhibition so far.

The photos exhibit the lifestyle, historical heritages, and geography of Pokhara.  “We are trying to brief people about Pokhara’s history,” Kiranman said. The exhibition also depicts stories of other districts including Tanahun, Bandipur, Gorkha, Mustang, Lamjung, Nuwakot, Syangja, Palpa and Gulmi.

Photos in the exhibition clearly show the shape, size and boundaries of the lake back then. The exhibition has grasped attentions of various domestic and foreign tourists. “I have tried to protect the history of Pokhara through these photos. We have had heartwarming responses from the visitors,” Kiranmaan added.
