AMARGADHI, Dec 19: The historic Amargadhi Fort in Dadeldhura has been opened for the public for the first time in 10 years. The fort was closed by Nepal Army (NA) during the Maoist insurgency for security reasons.

The fort has been opened for the public following pressure from the local residents. The decision to open the fort was taken after an all-side meeting in the district.

Chief District Officer Rajendra Prasad Ghimire opened the fort for the public by cutting a ribbon amidst a function on Saturday.

The municipality was named after the fort in 1997. It was initially opened for the public after the restoration of democracy in 1990.

The municipality has fixed Rs 10 entry fee for students and handicapped people and Rs 20 for commoners, said executive officer Kabendra Bhatta. However, visitors will not be allowed to take photograph in the fort.

The fort was built by Nepal´s valorous soldier Amar Singh Thapa to block British advancement into Nepal in the early 19th century. Nepal Army troop has been guarding the fort after the unification of Nepal.
