KATHMANDU, May 2: The Asian Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs (AIDIA) hosted the second edition of its Distinguished Lecture series on Thursday, featuring Elnur Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, as the keynote speaker. The event, held in Kathmandu, explored the theme “Foreign Policy of Azerbaijan: Challenges and Opportunities.”
In his address, Deputy Minister Mammadov outlined Azerbaijan's current foreign policy priorities, which include finalizing a peace agreement, border delimitation, and reopening transportation and communication links. He emphasized Azerbaijan's active engagement on the global stage, particularly through its Chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), describing it as a key platform for the Global South.
Mammadov also highlighted Azerbaijan's leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and its upcoming role as host of COP29, expected to draw tens of thousands of participants, including over 80 heads of state and government.
Essence of Mustang in exhibition
On domestic matters, the Deputy Minister shared Azerbaijan's ambitions for a green energy transition, targeting 30–33% renewable electricity generation by 2027. He also introduced ASAN Service, the country's award-winning e-governance platform that has transformed public service delivery, offering to support Nepal in implementing similar systems.
Sunil KC, Founder of AIDIA, opened the event by stressing the importance of stronger Nepal-Azerbaijan ties. He identified hydropower, energy infrastructure, and tourism as key sectors for collaboration and called for more sustainable and strategic partnerships between the two countries.
Dr. Anjan Shakya, Member of the National Assembly and Coordinator of the Nepal-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Working Group, emphasized the shared resilience of the two nations. She pointed out untapped potential in trade—particularly in agriculture, textiles, and manufacturing—and urged stronger educational and cultural exchanges. Dr. Shakya also called for direct air connectivity and streamlined visa procedures to promote greater economic and people-to-people ties.
Elchin Huseynli, Non-Resident Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Nepal, reaffirmed Azerbaijan's commitment to enhancing bilateral ties through a multi-pronged approach, encompassing political, economic, and cultural engagement.
Deputy Minister Mammadov is currently on an official visit to Nepal, accompanied by a high-level Azerbaijani delegation—a significant step in advancing diplomatic relations between the two countries.
