Agro production up

KATHMANDU, May 17: Though production of cereal crops dropped by 4.33 percent, production of other cash crops and others crops has increased this year, thanks to increasing commercialization in agriculture sector.



Production cash crops, vegetables, fruits, spices and livestock increased this year as compared to the figures recorded last year, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives (MoAC). Production of jute, sugarcane, oil seed, coffee, cotton, mushroom, garlic, turmeric, honey and vegetables increased remarkably this year. [break]



“Increasing commercialization in the agriculture sector is the major reason behind the impressive rise in production of different crops this year,” said Dr Hari Dahal, spokesperson of MoAC.



According to a new MoAC report, production of sugarcane has increased by 10 percent to 2,592,500 tons from 2,354,412 previous recorded last year. Similarly, oil seed production also rose by 10.43 percent to 149,625 tons, while production of coffee jumped by 15 percent to 384 tons.



Likewise, jute production increased by 19 percent to 20,965 tons, mushroom rose by 11 percent to 1,100 tons, spice crops by 16 percent to 39,566 tons and turmeric production by 13 percent to 36456 tons.



While production of vegetables increased by 9 percent to 3,001,000 tons, fruits production grew by 3 percent to 705,000 tons. Production of potatoes increased to 2.45 million tons from 2.42 million tons recorded a year ago.
