After 16 years on the run, two fugitives arrested for trafficking three Nepali women to Indian brothels

KATHMANDU, April 1: Police arrested two individuals 16 years after they fled, having trafficked three young women into flesh trade in India, selling them for Rs 100,000 each. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police conducted the arrests in Kathmandu.

According to the police, those arrested are Bachchu BK, 38, from Indrawati Rural Municipality-4, Sindhupalchok, and Dawa Tamang, 47, from the same area.

According to the police, the arrested persons, including BK and Lama, had ensnared three young women by stating that they would send them to Lebanon for lucrative foreign employment on January 18, 2008. They transported the women from Sindhupalchok to Birgunj through Kathmandu and then to Sahidnagar in India, where they sold each woman into brothels for Rs 100,000 and forced them into prostitution.

The Sindhupalchok District Court found BK and Lama guilty of human trafficking and sentenced them on February 13, 2022. According to the police, BK was sentenced to 30 years in prison and ordered to pay Rs 300,000 in fines while Lama received a 60-year sentence and a Rs 600,000 fine.

Even after the verdict, both of them were absconding. Recently, the police received information that they were hiding in Kathmandu. On March 18, the CIB team arrested BK from Budhanilkantha Municipality-12, Kapan, Kathmandu. Similarly, on March 29, they arrested Lama in Mahalakshmi Municipality-5, Tikathali in Lalitpur as SP Hobindra Bogati stated.

After the arrest, the CIB presented both convicts to the District Court, Kathmandu on Sunday. According to Spokesperson Bogati, the court has now sent both individuals to jail to serve their sentences.
