Affiliation to medical colleges is underway following due process: TU Rector

KATHMANDU, March 26: At a time when Prof Dr. Govinda KC is staging a hunger strike demanding a halt on new affiliation to colleges for medical education, Tribhuvan University (TU) Rector Gunanidhi Neupane said that the process to grant affiliation is moving ahead following the due process.

At an interaction programme here Thursday, Neupane said that the TU Executive Council was holding intensive discussions on the process and a decision to this effect is awaited. On the occasion, Neupane said agitating Prof Dr KC should not fuel the issue unnecessarily.

He was of the view that the decision of the Institute of Medicine (IoM) not to grant affiliation to new medical colleges could be reverted.

Likewise, CPN (UML) leader Dr Banshidhar Mishra termed Dr KC's hunger strike as meaningless. He claimed that the scope of medical education in Nepal was very bright provided investment was made in the sector and environment was created at home for preventing students from going abroad for medical education.

However, former president of Nepal Medical Association Dr Kedarnar Singh KC said that medical colleges were established without a strong foundation and as high as 1,800 students were taking medical education despite the capacity for only 600 students.

Similarly, Chairman of the Birgunj-based Nepal Medical College Dr J Ansari said that Dr KC's hunger strike was aimed at providing medical services in the rural areas and health access to all people.

During the programme, doctors Badri Rijal and Dr Bishnurath Giri expressed their solidarity to the agitation of Prof Dr KC.
