Adhikari resigns as lawmaker

KATHMANDU, May 23: Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Radheshyam Adhikari resigned as a Constituent Assembly (CA) member on Wednesday expressing his dissent over the government´s move to register the bill seeking extension of the CA term by another three months.



Adhikari is one of the 26 CA members nominated by the then government. He was nominated on the recommendation of NC under the principle of proportional representation. He tendered his resignation to CA Chairman Subas Nembang. [break]



Adhikari, a legal expert and also the former president of Nepal Bar Association, said," The Supreme Court (last November) clearly ruled that the current term of CA would be the last one. I decided to quit as it is totally wrong to go for another extension of CA against the SC ruling."



Also in his resignation letter, Adhikari has stated that there is no point in holding a CA position as the government move to register the bill is against norms of democracy, the rule of law and the doctrine of separation of powers.



The SC had also made it clear that the CA would face automatic dissolution if it fails to promulgate the new constitution by May 27.
