KATHMANDU, Jan 2: Nepal, along with three other SAARC countries, will soon have an optical fiber hub in Siliguri, India.

After the completion of the Broadband Internet Connectivity Program, which is being implemented with the assistance from Asian Development Bank, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh will get broadband internet at cheaper prices.

The $11.2million-project is slated to complete in the next 18 months.[break]

Narayan Prasad Regmi, project director and joint secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communications, said ADB is investing $9 million for the project and the government has pledged the remaining $2.2 million.

Under the project, broadband data will be brought from Kolkata to Siliguri and distributed to the four countries.

The government will need to lay optical fiber from Kathmandu to the hub in Siliguri to enjoy broadband internet at cheaper rates.
