A show of bravado

“A show of bravado” is one which defies every odd to emerge from a feat, however simple it may seem.

The following are such examples taken from real life – bungee jumping from a bridge, cliff, or high-rise building, with only an elastic rope attached to the ankle; or a stunt where the driver takes several tumbles in a car; and an escape artist who frees himself even when he is chained and placed in a coffin and immersed in icy cold water.[break]

All these death-defying acts serve as reminders that one can defy life itself and come out unscathed. Much can be said about those who have, literally speaking, thrown caution to the wind. In a bid for cheap glory, they have exchanged a few precious moments to snatch themselves from the jaws of death. Nothing is as sure and sweet as then coming out alive after a venture where there is no room for human error.

It takes split-second timing and a certain brazenness to involve oneself in such acts. And it is a measure of being impervious to the stakes against them. Notwithstanding all these traits, it remains to be seen how far they are going to go to attract public notice and attention. Even though these acts are short-lived, they form indelible moments to be cherished over and over again.

Because such acts are daring, no one can walk away without being shaken up and a bit dazed. The nerves are on edge and the muscles sore and aching, but these do not deter them from another attempt. Pulling it off is like a surge of adrenalin with a heightened sense of making it. It is at once a heady experience and a pleasurable sensation that lingers on for several days.

The actors involved are committed to perform, and nothing will hold them back. The refrain that goes to make them go on has much to do with seeing through it all. The performers are, no doubt, in their own state of mind, and more importantly, have permission from the organizers of the event.

Although this is risky behavior, and the chances of something going wrong high, the show must go on in spite of everything. Every exigency has been looked over carefully before the green signal is given. And these exploits are caught live on digital cameras, video tapes and television footage.

Without so much as a backward glance, or giving it a second thought, these hardy souls risk life and limb to carry out their high-voltage, dramatic acts. Pulling such stunts off brings gasps of disbelief from their stunned crowds who are also quick to realize what is happening – the import of the situation.
