Number of Nepalis dying of coronavirus in the UK climbs to 20

KATHMANDU, April 24: Three more Nepalis living in the United Kingdom died of the novel coronavirus recently, the Nepali Embassy in London said.

Spokesperson for the embassy, Sharad Raj Aran said that Gopal Gurung, 72, Hansa Raj Lingden, 65, and Bima Nachhiring Rai succumbed to COVID-19.

With these three recent deaths, the number of Nepalis who died of the contagion in the UK climbed to 20, according to the spokesperson.

Earlier this week, the Non-resident Nepali Association (NRNA) said that 17 Nepalis had died of the deadly virus in the United Kingdom since the COVD-19 outbreak in Europe.

Gurung, who hailed from Pyuthan, migrated to India, and eventually to the UK a couple of years ago. He was a family member of a British Gurkha soldier. Another deceased, Rai, originally from Khotang of eastern Nepal, died while undergoing treatment at the George Elite Hospital in the UK.

The woman, also a kidney patient, had been living in Nottingham since last year. Lingden, who had been living in Reading city, died of coronavirus infection on Wednesday. He passed away at Royal Berkshire Hospital while undergoing treatment. The sexagenarian was receiving medicines for hypertension. He had been living in Britain with his family for 14 years.
