Ten people died and over two dozen sustained injuries when a passenger bus skidded off the road and plunged some 100 meters down the road near the Khalanga army barracks in Pyuthan on Monday afternoon.
Similarly, eight pilgrims died and 40 others were injured when a passenger bus heading for Bardibas from Langoor River of Sindhuli district met with an accident at 3:20 pm.
In Pyuthan accident, six passengers were killed on the spot and four others breathed their last while undergoing treatment. The bus (Na 3 Kha 8383) was heading for Sautamare Bangephedi from the district headquarters of Pyuthan, police informed.
According to an eyewitness, the accident took place while giving way to motorbike coming from the opposite direction. Rescue works were carried out by Nepal Army and Nepal Police personnel with support from the locals.
Those killed in the Pyuthan accident have been identified as bus driver Dan Bahadur Pokharel, Narendra GC, Maya KC, Hasta Bahadur Basnet and Sanjay Sunar of Pyuthan; Lanka Bahadur Rawal of Kapilvastu and Sita Pandit of Dang. Identities of other three deceased have yet to be ascertained.
Among the injured, 17 are receiving treatment at Bijuwar District Hospital and Life Care Hospital in Bagdula.
Similarly, two of those injured in the Mahottari accident breathed their last while being rushed to hospital. Of the eight killed in the accident, seven are male and one female.
According to the police, the bus (Ja 1 Kha 449) was over speeding when it lost control and veered off into a stream. All of the passengers in the bus were Bol Bom pilgrims. Police suspect most of them are from Dhanusha and Mahottari districts.
The injured are receiving treatment at various health centers in Bardibas.
Police said that identities of the deceased have yet to be ascertained.
