Organizing a press conference in the capital, Kuma Shrestha, President of the club, said they expect participation of about 12 teams in the six-day event. However, the tournament will not see participation of departmental teams, the volleyball powerhouses.
"Since departmental teams are always superior in quality, we are not including them in the tournament. The participation of regional and non-departmental teams will be boosted in the absence of departmental teams. When competing with departmental sides, the participation of other teams has just become a formality," Shrestha said. "However, the participating teams can field four national or departmental players in their squad."
The event will be played first in a league format. The participating teams will be divided into two groups and the top two sides from either group will secure semifinal spot where they will play each other in a knockout format. Shrestha further stated that the tournament was also organized to honor the contributions of deceased social worker Chandra Bahadur Sherpa.
The top three teams of the tournament will be rewarded with cash prizes of Rs 100,000 Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. The participating teams of Central Region will be given Rs 10,000 and other teams will be given Rs 15,000 as a management cost. The expected cost of the event is Rs 1.9 million.
