KATHMANDU: With little visible progress towards holding the Nepali Congress (NC)’ regular general convention before the March 5 House of Representatives (HoR) polls, pressure is mounting within the party for an alternative course. Youth leader Shankar Tiwari has emerged as a vocal proponent of a special general convention, warning that continued indecision by the party leadership risks deepening internal frustration.

In a press statement issued on Friday, Tiwari said there are no signs that the party will be able to organise its regular general convention within the announced timeframe. A general convention representative himself and a signatory advocating a special convention, Tiwari argued that the leadership has failed to translate commitments into concrete preparations.

The NC’s Central Working Committee (CWC), following the political upheavals of September 8 and 9 had convened a marathon 49-day meeting and fixed January 10-12, 2026, as the dates for the convention. Yet, as December 26 approaches, Tiwari says the prospect of meeting that deadline appears increasingly remote.

His frustration is sharpened by public remarks from the party’s own spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, who has hinted that the regular convention may not take place on scheduled date. Tiwari described such signals as a slight to the majority of general convention representatives who are pressing for internal reform and renewal.

According to Tiwari, the announced timetable for the regular convention was less a genuine roadmap than a tactical move to dilute calls for a special convention. He said party cadres were misled by assurances that the process would move ahead at “rocket speed,” a promise that now appears hollow now.

As dissatisfaction simmers, Tiwari warned that those who have already signed in favour of a special convention can no longer afford to remain silent. He called for increased pressure on the leadership, including the possibility of surrounding the party’s central office, signalling that the debate over the party’s future direction is entering a more confrontational phase.
