In the past, more people, who wanted to leave the country for abroad job, used to apply for passports at the District Administration Office.
But as many companies have been laying off workers in several Gulf countries and other nations due to global financial crisis, local youth here are not getting enough employment opportunities, thus pulling down the number of passport seekers.
Records say only 2,207 people applied for passports during last fiscal. The number is down by 125.
Authorities say most of the youth want to go abroad for employment, but due to global financial downturn some of them do not want to go abroad now.
Apart from the global recession, rampant cases of cheating by brokers and unavailability of employment opportunities as promised by them are also said to be the causes for the decline in the number of passport seekers.
