Top NC, UML leaders meet to form political mechanism

KATHMANDU, July 31: Top leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC) and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) have stepped up consultations to form high level political mechanism to resolve the ongoing political stand off. [break]



Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal met NC President Girija Prasad Koirala on Friday morning at the latter´s residence in Maharajgunj to discuss in detail about the formation of a political mechanism to help draft the new constitution on time and take the ongoing peace process to a logical end. NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel, senior NC leader Krishna Sitaula, UML Vice Chairman Ashok Rai and Information and Communication Minister Shankar Pokharel also attended the meeting.



NC leader Sitaula said both parties agreed to further strengthen understanding, unity and trust among all political parties to achieve the goal of bringing the ongoing peace process to a logical end and drafting the new constitution on time. They also agreed to hold discussion with all the political parties including fringe parties in the Constituent Assembly before forming a political committee.



Sitaula said top leaders of the NC, the UML and the Maoists are scheduled to meet on Saturday morning to finalize the draft on the modality of the proposed political mechanism. Talking briefly to media persons, UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal said they would finalize the draft model of the political mechanism on Saturday. He said that they will also hold discussion with the fringe parties before drafting the modality of the mechanism.
