KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Four party youth wings have submitted protest letters to the Home Minister, the Indian embassy and the district administration offices over the Indian armed police raid at Manjur Kumar Shrestha´s house in Gulariya on Wednesday.

Submitting the protest letters Thursday, they demanded that the Nepal government and the Indian government commitment themselves not to allow any repeat of such acts and that they make public their official views. [break]

Indian armed police had entered Shrestha´s house and terrorized local people. The youth wings also vented their ire with election government chief Khila Raj Regmi and the Indian ambassador to Nepal, arguing that they ignored them even after receiving the protest letters and even though it was a concern of national sovereignty and not of any particular party.

Minister for Home Madhav Ghimire and a representative of the Indian Embassy had received the protest letters. "The minister did not pay any attention and show any seriousness toward the matter. He just said the government would make public its views soon," Uday Bahadur Chalaune, chief of the National Youth People´s Volunteers, told Republica.

In their protest letters to the government, they have demanded serious efforts through political and diplomatic channels not to allow any repeat of such acts. Similarly, they drew the attention of the Indian government to respect Nepal´s sovereignty.

The four youth wing leaders issued a statement Wednesday, arguing that the raid by the Indian armed police was a naked assault on Nepali sovereignty. Revolutionary Youth Wing, Youth People´s Security Force, Nepal Youth Communist Association (United) and National Youth People´s Volunteers submitted the protest letters.

"We consulted the youth wings of all the political parties, including UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and CPN-UML. But they did not participate," said Chalaune.

"At a time when consensus with the agitating forces is slim, the silence of the major political parties, their sister wings and the government over this issue is mysterious," he added.

Meanwhile, the government has drawn the attention of the Indian government through its embassy here over the Indian armed police raid in Gularia.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Spokesperson Dipak Dhital, MoFA Thursday drew the attention of the Indian embassy over the breach of sovereignty by Indian police. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed concern over the incident and requested the Indian side to investigate the matter and make sure such incidents will not happen in future,” he said.

Dhital said the Indian side gave assurance that they would investigate the matter and, if found to be true, take appropriate action against the officials concerned and make sure such incidents will not occur in future.

Nearly a dozen Indian police personnel who came in three jeeps raided Shrestha´s house in Gulariya, district headquarters of Bardiya.

Issuing a statement of its own Thursday, the Indian embassy said the matter was under investigation. “We do not condone such incidents and if the reports are found true, action will be taken,” it said.
