KATHMANDU, Sept 19: The Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for filing nominations under both the proportional and first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral systems, by a week. However, the extension would not affect the overall calendar of events of November 19 poll.

According to Dolakh Bahadur Gurung, election commissioner, the EC extended the deadline by a week upon the request made by the government and the top political parties. [break]

As per the commission´s new calendar of events, political parties registered with the EC should file nominations under the proportional electoral system on September 30, and under first-past-the-post (FPTP) on October 3.

Earlier, the EC had set aside September 23 and 26 for political parties to nominate their candidates contesting the election under the FPTP and proportional electoral systems respectively.

A cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday afternoon decided to urge the constitutional body to extend the deadline for nominations for a few days without affecting the date of the Constituent Assembly (CA) poll.

The Interim Election Council took the decision a day after the High Level Political Committee (HLPC) met the top EC officials and urged them to extend the deadline by 10 days.
