6.0 magnitude quake hits Kathmandu and its surroundings

KATHMANDU, Aug 30: An earthquake that hit Kathmandu Valley and its surrounding districts at 11:33 pm Friday night was measured to be 6.0 on the Richter scale.



Dilliram Tiwari, an officer at the National Seismological Centre (NSC) informed that the earthquake lies some 100 Kilometers far away from Dolakha District bordering the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. [break]



The quake followed by aftershocks at the midnight rushed people out of their homes in the capital. An aftershock was recorded about five minutes later the quake. According to a report published by the United Nations in 2004, Nepal was ranked as the 11th most earthquakes -vulnerable country in the world.
