- 47.69% pass in exempted, 708 secure 1st division
KATHMANDU, June 28: More than 68 percent passed the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations this year, as the proverbial ´Iron Gate´ increasingly offers wider opening and no more holds that aura of invincibility. [break]
While 63.73 percent passed in last year’s regular SLC examination, setting a record in living memory, the 68.47 percent this year has obliterated that figure by almost five percent. This great figure is in stark contrast to the examination controller Birendra Kumar Jha’s recent claims that the pass percentage would nosedive.
According to the results published by the Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCE) Sunday evening, a total of 234,602 out of 342,632 regular students have passed the examination—11,304 of whom have secured distinction. Those making it through the examination held from March 25 to April this year include 132,662 boys and 101,940 girls.
While 87,772 students secured first division, the number of students making it in the second and third divisions stand at 125,421 and 10,105 respectively. Officials at the OCE said 1,949 regular students dropped the exam and the results of another 2,248 have been withheld.
The pass percentage of exempted students, however, stands just at 47.69 percent. Of the total 45,890 exempted students, 21,887 cleared their examination this year with 708 students passing in the first division, 17,570 in second and 3,609 third.
No official declaration of top students was made this year keeping with the examination board´s scrapping the provision of announcing the names of board toppers five years ago. The longstanding provision was scrapped citing the publicizing of names of SLC toppers as unhealthy competition.
Deputy examination controller Ambika Prasad Regmi said that this high pass rate is due to the combination of students´ diligence and hard work of teachers.
The board decided to provide grace marks up to five for two subjects this year which pushed the pass percentage by four, said Madhu Timilsina who was a teachers´ representative at the board.
The students could find their results on the Internet as early as eight in the evening as the OCE officially declared the results published at 6:15 p.m.
The SLC Board was established in 1934 AD and only 34 students took the exams in the initial run. The students then were from Durbar High School and Patan High School.
