BUTWAL, Feb 24: An election for a new leadership of the Youth Association Nepal (YAN) has begun here since this afternoon.

The election, the key session of the Association´s ongoing general convention, was delayed as it took more time to make consensus over the election committee to finalize the name of representatives. Earlier, the election was scheduled to begin from Saturday evening.[break]

The election was delayed as the general convention presented the final name list of the representatives to the election committee only today, said chief election commissioner Dr RC Acharya. Now, the general convention is to prolong by one day.

About 500 representatives have filed candidacy for 135-member new working committee. The voting was likely to begin from this evening.

Finally, two members are vying for the post of chairman. Sitting Chairman Mahesh Basnet and general secretary Niraj Acharya have filed candidacy for the chairmanship post. Jhapat Rawal who was earlier believed to be the third candidate for the post has finally backed Basnet.

The result of the voting is expected to come out by tomorrow morning.

A total of 1,436 representatives across the country are taking part in the general convention began from Friday.

The YAN is the youth wing of the Communist Party of Nepal (UML).
