Issuing a statement signed by party secretary Pradip Parajuli, the party described the attack by the youth wing of the ruling UCPN (Maoist) as the ‘authoritarian’ government’s gross violation of people’s rights to peaceful demonstration. [break]
“Nepali Congress strongly condemns such an act of the government, which is irresponsible, despotic to its people and the country,” the statement read, adding, “Nepali Congress warns the Maoists not to repeat such non-political act.” The party has also asked for free treatment for the injured.
Several protesters from opposition parties, including NC and CPN-UML, and journalists were injured when YCL cadres attacked them while the latter were staging anti-government demonstrations near the Maoist district convention at Banepa bus park.
