President Dr Yadav decided to call an all-party meeting after four major political parties -- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML and United Madhesi Democratic Front (UDMF) -- failed to reach consensus despite a series of negotiations over the past one month. He will confer with the heads of the parties at 9 am at his office in Shital Niwas before his five-day official visit to India.[break]
There were 33 political parties in the CA. Lately, some of the parties, including the ruling UCPN (Maoist) and MPRF-Democratic, split to form new parties.
Consensus in nominating a prime ministerial candidate seems nowhere in sight as leaders from the major political parties remain sharply divided over who should lead the election government. While the opposition alliance led by the NC and the UML have proposed NC President Sushil Koirala as the alliance´s common candidate, the ruling alliance has stood against him till date.
The president, in his first call in writing on November 23, had urged the political parties to nominate a prime ministerial candidate through consensus and come up with an appropriate proposal to form a new government within a week. The president had to issue a deadline in writing to the political parties after repeated informal calls yielded no result.
