KATHMANDU, Dec 23: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav is to begin political consultations for consensus after the major political parties failed to reach agreement despite the lapse of one month since the President set five deadlines for the parties to choose a consensus prime minister.

President Yadav has invited the representatives of all the parties represented in the dissolved Constituent Assembly for a meeting with him at 9 a.m. on Monday.[break]

The Office of the President, in a communiqué issued on Sunday, stated that the President has called the leaders of the political parties represented in the then Constituent Assembly for a meeting on Monday morning.

The Head of State had for the first time on November 23 called on the political parties for constituting a government of national consensus. He had again called on the political parties for the same for the fifth time on December 18. The latest deadline set by the President elapsed on December 22.

The President had from time to time extended the deadline for the political parties to choose a consensus prime minister after the parties failed to reach consensus on the issue.

Although the major political parties are saying that efforts are on to forge consensus, they have differences over who should lead the new national unity government.
