543 tons of fruits imported through Korala border in 11 days

MUSTANG, Oct 9: A total of 543 tons of fruits have been imported from China through the Korala border crossing over the past 11 days.



The Quarantine Office in Nhechung, Lomanthang-4, reported an influx of Chinese fruits following heavy rain and snowfall. Bandana Ghartimagar, a technical assistant at the office, said the imports included 87.3 tons of apples, 16.1 tons of mangoes and 8.316 tons of dragon fruit.

However, the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road has remained completely blocked since September 27 due to adverse weather conditions, disrupting the transportation of the imported fruits to their destinations. The prolonged delay has raised concerns about spoilage, as the fruits remain stranded in containers.


Meanwhile, some dragon fruit from a stranded container was distributed to locals in Jomsom, Mustang, on Thursday. Subas Sunuwar, a company representative, said the distribution helped save dragon fruit worth around Rs 2.4 million from rotting.


He added that delays in transportation had caused estimated losses of Rs 3 million.
