The UWTC Trade Association had launched an indefinite strike beginning Thursday, demanding security because a robbery had occurred in one of the mobile phone shops inside the mall. The UWTC resumed operations on Sunday, after the management assured round-the-clock security inside the complex.
Shakunta Lal Hirachan, chief executive of the UWTC, also said that the mall wouldn´t have remained closed had some of the tenants not provoked the other owners. "Most of the people who own shops in our mall were against the indefinite closure of the shopping complex," he told reporters at a press conference. "But those who had not paid their rents provoked the others."
According to him, Sanjaya Adhikari, president of the UWTC Trade Association, owes the UWTC around Rs 2.5 million. "There are more people on each flat of the UWTC who have not paid their rent," he said. "We had given them a deadline of until Monday to pay the due amount, and that´s why they launched the protest."
