KATHMANDU, May 23: The hardline faction of the UCPN (Maoist) led by Mohan Baidya has taken strong exception to the government decision to seek extension of the Constituent Assembly term for three more months and urged the political parties to seek an alternative to the extension.

Issuing a press statement on Wednesday, Baidya and party General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa also accused the political parties of wasting the past two years without taking serious initiatives to draft the constitution.[break]

"The parties should have worked to find consensus for political solution," they said in the joint statement, "But the leadership of the major parties did not care about that. We urge all forces for political consensus to defend national sovereignty and seek an alternative to the extension."

The rebel faction said it has taken the decision of the party´s establishment faction to extend the term as a conspiracy, mysterious and unexpected at a time when "external forces" are meddling in internal affairs of the country.

"It has become clear that the top leaders of the major parties have failed. In this context, the decision to seek extension of the Constituent Assembly term should be reviewed and all efforts should be put in to draft the constitution by May 27," they said in the statement.
